Dun Aonghassa on the Aron Island of Isish Mor is one of my favorite places in the world. I have been many times under different lighting and weather conditions. My daughters, wife and I were especially thrilled by our recent visit when terrific winds shifted all around us. Our hair blew straight up, then forward, then back. I kept the girls away from the edge until it calmed. The ancient fort and ceremony site atop the cliff is dated back to the year zero A.D. On the morning of this photograph, I climbed up with my 4x5 Sinar view camera during dawn. I sat down about eight feet from the edge and scooted with my tripod to the very edge. The wind buffeted me irregularly as I huddled in awe under my dark cloth waiting for the right moments to trip the shutter. The view camera allowed me to shift the lens down to take in the Atlantic and to swing the lens to make the cliff-edge the plane of focus in that pivotal frame. Then I tilted the lens to focus across the top of the Ocean and across the surface of the rocks and wild flowers. The fine print of this piece is 44" x 92". I printed it myself with my Archival Epson 9800 printer. The detail and subtlety is very gratifying.
